The "N-word"

During the episode “The Garden Party”… Wow! I use that a lot, I really like that episode. Anyhoo, during the episode “The Garden Party” Uncle Ruckus decides to sing a completely racist song to all of the guests in an attempt to make the Freeman family sound untrustworthy because they were black. At the end of the horribly choreographed song, a white chick breaks the silence “I think the N-word’s o.k. as long as they say it”. Thus the point I’m trying to make. Is it o.k. to use the “N-word” Although I fully admit to having absolutely no black heritage, I also admit that I use the word. As Gin Rummy explained, I used the term to describe an ignorant motherfucka, which can be anyone of any race. Where my opinion really stands, just because you donated to Collin Powell, doesn’t mean you’re not racist, and just because you’re black doesn’t mean that you’re the only person who can use the word in sentence. Really…? If you’re going to use that argument, whose Bobby Seal and Huey Newton? And yes, it was initially a good thing. A person’s freedom of speech is something I really think should be exercised. However, use some common courtesy. If it’s really offending the vast majority and it’s pissing off people who normally wouldn’t care because you’re offending other people, shut-up and don’t be a dick! (Seriously, if I offend anyone, let me know. It is not my intent.)

  1. A little 11-year-old boy named Jonathan McCoy would have to disagree with you. He's spending all his time trying to wipe that word out of our national vocabulary and for really good reasons. See his story here: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/23/eveningnews/main5414362.shtml
I'm all about free speech, but I'm with little Jonathan on this. People can explain away the word all they'd like and make justifications for using it and on and on and on. But the history of the word and what it means is ugly. And it's not something kids like Jonathan should have to grow up hearing, I think.

  2. What it really comes down to is that either everyone should be able to say it without offending anyone or no one should be able to say it.

  3. That would be equality, and you know we can't have that.

  4. I'm sorry, and I realize I'm white, but I don't think any white people in this country should be griping about equality. The reason this country is where it is in the world today is largely slave labor. It's fucked up and it's wrong and equality has never been a reality here.
However, the word should definitely be wiped out. Continual use of it, by anyone, is a bad bad thing I think. (Yay! Jonathan!)

  5. I understand where everyone is coming from, & not saying that my opinion is the right answer, but I think it is the racism behind the word that's hurtful. It's just a theory, & I'm really really sorry if I pissed anybody off. That wasn't the intent.
